about
MOUNTAINS is the first single I decided to release as Aloysius Bell. After a two-year break from touring and performing, I felt that if I was going to do this thing and truly open myself up to people, I wanted the first song I put out there to be really personal.
The song is about being held back by the past, about heartbreak – not necessarily romantic – and wanting to move forward, not knowing how, not seeing clearly anymore, but having to try anyway. Like, if the good parts of your life are obscured by this one big bad thing that makes you unable to see past, there’s some housekeeping that needs to be done. "I’ll always be alone if I don’t leave you behind", is the line that pretty much sums up it up for me. There’s sadness there, but more importantly there’s a choice being made to not settle for staying stuck. It’s about getting to the other side.
lyrics
Gone one day
No known address
Lost somewhere
Maybe east, west
Shape of you standing there
Right in front of me
Blocking my sight, blocking the light
Thought we’d got over
Worst distress
But then you’ve always played it
Pretty close to the chest
I know this only really matters to me
I take up the right to give up the fight
If there were mountains
I wouldn’t know
If there were oceans
I couldn’t go below
If all was well
I wouldn’t feel right
All I can feel is the night
Oh, the night
The night
Dark in the mirror
You at my back
Try to see clearly
But the glass is cracked
Stepping away from you
I’m walking through fire
I know I’ll burn if I don’t try
Will I ever lose you, will I ever be free?
Your shade ever-present in my periphery
I gave you all my heart
For what I thought we had
I’ll always be alone
If I don’t leave you behind

Gamine, she sets her sights on the full voicing of her imaginings. Fever dreams become songs, heartbreak turns into resolve and secrets into full-blown confessions. Light, soulful vocals, intricate, ear-catching melody served over lyrics that come from deep and quiet listening....more
